Your Rights to Paid Time Off to Attend a Course

Union Reps and Safety Reps have a legal right to paid time off to attend TUC or union approved courses under the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992, the ACAS Code of Practice on Time Off for Trade Union Duties & Activities 1998, and the Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations 1977. These rights apply to part-time as well as full-time workers.

If you would like more details of the wording of the relevant parts of the Code of Practice and the Safety Reps' Regulations, click here. You can also find details of rights to time off on the TUC website.

Expenses

Your employer will not normally pay your travel or subsistence expenses for the course. However, most trade unions reimburse reps for reasonable expenses associated with attending the course, normally in arrears. You will need to contact a Branch or full-time officer to find out how to claim for these expenses.
